Akvaplan-niva AS

Read more...Based in Tromsø, Norway (69° N), Akvaplan-niva (APN),  is a leader in the understanding of benthic fauna and ecosystem processes in the European Arctic. APN, along with the University of Tromsø, is also a founding member of the ARCTOS Network. APN falls under the EU definition of a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) and, through its participation in FP6 programmes MarBEF and ECASA, has worked in this role to integrate SMEs and research institutions. APN also has participated in development of international standards for environmental monitoring (e.g. ISO standards for sampling and sample processing).

Greenland Institute of Natural Resources

Read more...The GINR - Center of Marine Ecology and Climate Impact was initiated in 2005. The aim of the center is to enhance knowledge about the interaction between climate and the seas around Greenland in order to advise the Greenland Homerule on how climate affects the marine resources. Such interactions are complex and involve a number of different scientific disciplines, for example biology, meteorology, oceanography and glaciology. The Center therefore cooperates with several Danish and foreign universities and research institutes to combine forces and have set-up several measuring and research programs collecting data in remote regions year-round. GINR is responsible for the long-term monitoring programs “MarineBasic” in East Greenland (Young Sound 74°N), NuukBasic in West Greenland (64°N) and the 50 yr time series of oceanographic measurements around Greenland. Furthermore, GINR are in charge of data covering Greenlandic fisheries reaching back 100 yr.

Max-Planck Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V., Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie

Read more...The overall mission of the MPG-M is to understand how chemical, physical, and biological processes, as well as human behaviour contribute to the dynamics of the Earth system, and specifically how they relate to global climate changes. The objectives of the institute are to undertake an analysis of the Earth's composition and dynamics, focusing on the interactive biological, chemical and physical processes that define Earth System dynamics, and more specifically to develop and use the appropriate tools to investigate the complexity of the Earth system, explain its natural variability, assess how the system is affected by changes in land use, industrial development, urbanization, and other human induced perturbations. Among these tools are advanced numerical models that simulate the behaviour of the atmosphere, the ocean, the cryosphere and the biosphere, and the interactions between these different components of the Earth's system.

Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas

Read more...Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC) is the largest research organisation in Spain, with over 4,000 scientists distributed in 130 institutes. The scientists at CSIC, lead by Prof. Carlos M. Duarte are highly experienced in research within the European Framework Program, with Prof. Duarte having coordinated three EU funded projects, including an Integrated Project (the THRESHOLDS Project). The groups participating in ATP have participated in over 20 EU-funded projects (including five FP 6 projects). The participants conduct research on marine ecology, both benthic and pelagic, and the effects of global change on these ecosystems. The group has published over 300 papers in international journals, including major journals, such as Science and Nature, and is currently developing considerable effort to the assessment of the impacts of climate change on polar ecosystems. CSIC will contribute with scientists from two separate institutes: Instituto Mediterraneo de Estudios Avanzados; IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB), in Majorca, and the Instituto de Ciencias del Mar, ICM; in Barcelona
