Arctic Frontiers (AFT) holds its 5th annual conference in Tromsø, Norway, with the title “Arctic Tipping Points”.
The conference is divided into a policy section which will examine Arctic Tipping Points - Research as a driver for business and resource management in the High North and a scientific section. The scientifc section is divided into 3 parts:
A joint and multi disciplinary first day with 10 invited speakers ending with a panel and plenum debate;
Four parallel sessions (included a poster session) on the second and third day;
A summary session ending with a plenum debate
The parallel sessions address 4 connected, interwoven and interdisciplinary themes:
ATP participated as a stakeholder at workshop of the EU Arctic Footprints and Policy Assessment project, which took place on 14 April 2010 in Brussels.
At the conclusion of the scenario development process the EU Arctic Footprints and Policy Assessment project wish to gain a better and fuller understanding of the relationship shared by the EU and the Arctic region – and specifically, pressures on the Arctic deriving from the EU. Further, the EU Arctic Footprints and Policy Assessment project wishes to create a tool for developing new policy options for the EU (http://arctic-footprint.eu/).

The first results of the ATP project have been submitted
The ATP project has submitted the first reports on Arctic marine tipping points, thresholds, algae genetic and 1D sensitivity tests of the SINMOD model.
The reports are not available to the public, but are submitted to the EU and are available to the ATP team. In case some of the information is of interest to scientists they can contact the ATP team members mentioned in parentheses in order to discuss access to information.
The first annual meeting of ATP took place in Copenhagen, March 8-10 2010.
The venue with > 40 participants from all partners was organized at “Trekanen”, a meeting place of the town government of Copenhagen which was given free of charge to ATP through the local organizer, Dorte Krause-Jensen. The meeting was a full success, comprising on overviews from the work packages, research highlights, group discussions and presentations on future challenges, deliveries and meeting (see programme). Also the steering committee of ATP met and the ATP management team had a meeting with advisory board.
Arctic Frontiers holds an annual conference in Tromsø, Norway to discuss multiple perspectives of Arctic issues. The conference brings together stakeholders from the Arctic nations and the European Union, including decision- and policy- makers, government authorities and industry representatives, regional interest groups, top scientists and NGO’s. The meeting combines science and policy, with cultural events in surroundings that are conducive for networking. The annual conference is hosted by the University of Tromsø. Arctic Frontiers offers modern congress facilities, wide-ranging cultural activities including concerts, films, and exhibitions, and live internet broadcast with simultaneous translation into Russian and English.
Several ATP people are giving presentations during this conference this week.
The official start date for ATP was 1 February 2009. More than 30 persons involved in the project participated in the Kick-off meeting, which was held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in March.
Most of the activity these first months has been concentrated around the preparations for the first field and experimental season, starting in mid-June this year. A two weeks cruise with the RV Jan Mayen will take place around Svalbard, followed by 3 weeks of experimental work at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), in Longyearbyen.
